Typesafe Launches Reactive Bird, Welcomes Dong Nguyen as VP of Game Innovation

Reactive software company puts new spin on Flappy Bird, shifts focus to mobile gaming

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(April 1, 2014) - Typesafe, provider of the world's leading Reactive Platform and the company behind Play Framework, Akka, and Scala, today announced Dong Nguyen as VP of Game Innovation. Nguyen brings with him more than 5 years of industry experience building useless and free-to-play mobile games, and has an extensive history of mysteriously disappearing while profiting from frustratingly addictive time suckers.

Nguyen’s responsibilities will include spearheading Reactive Bird, the new rendition of Flappy Bird - the first fully Reactive bird navigation game - and helping Typesafe tackle the $10B online online gaming market. Nguyen will also oversee strategy and innovation around getting Scala and Java developers addicted to Typesafe Activator.

“After the success of Flappy Bird, I feel more confident, and I have freedom to do what I want to do. My main focus right now is building Reactive Bird,” says Dong Nguyen, Flappy Bird creator. “My experinece launching Flappy Bird and building games at dotears.com has been a great experience, and I’m now honored to join the Typesafe team to help them retrofit their business model for the mobile gaming space.”

When Typesafe launched as the Scala company in 2011, their goal was to commercialize their modern application platform for multicore and cloud computing. Despite securing an impressive roster of heavy hitting customers, such as LinkedIn, WalMart, UBS and more, Typesafe’s impressive board and executive team have made the decision to pivot the company and focus instead on bringing Reactive to mobile gaming starting with “Marty” the Reactive Bird.

We’re disrupting the mobile gaming space,” said Mark Brewer, President and CEO of Typesafe. “Never before has a company of our size and expertise made such a pivot. However, we believe that we have the best engineers imaginable to make Reactive Bird a household name, with many more reactive games to follow. Nguyen joining our team has confirmed it - the future is reactive!”
