We build and maintain the Akka message-driven runtime, Play web framework, Lagom Microservices framework, and Scala programming language, and we contribute to Apache Spark. Our mission is to help developers build high-performance applications that are message-driven, elastic, resilient and responsive.

We created the Lightbend Reactive Platform to make it easy to build software applications that are massively distributed and reduce the headaches and risks associated with managing Microservice-based apps in production.

Mark Brewer

Mark Brewer

President & CEO

Mark Brewer most recently served as Vice President of Business Operations for VMware's Cloud Application Platform, where he helped build out their cloud application platform portfolio. He integrated numerous technology companies including SpringSource, RabbitMQ, Gemstone and WaveMaker into VMware. Prior to VMware, Brewer was Vice President and General Manager of Enterprise Services at SpringSource, where he was responsible for the packaging and delivery of SpringSource's enterprise (subscription) offerings. Before joining SpringSource, Brewer was Chief Executive Officer of Covalent Technologies. Brewer also participates as Board Member for several open source technology companies, including Stormpath, LucidWorks and ActiveState. He holds a Bachelors of Science degree from Western Washington University.

Martin Odersky

Martin Odersky

Co-Founder

Martin Odersky created the Scala programming language and is a professor in the programming research group at EPFL, the leading technical university in Switzerland. Throughout his career, Martin's singular objective has been to make the basic job of writing programs faster, easier and more enjoyable. In the process, he has personally written more lines of Java and Scala code than almost any other individual in the world. He wrote javac, the compiler used by the majority of today's Java programmers, and scalac, the compiler used by the fast-growing Scala community. He authored "Programming in Scala," the best-selling book on Scala. Previously he has held positions at IBM Research, Yale University, University of Karlsruhe and University of South Australia, after having obtained his doctorate from ETH Zürich as a student of Niklaus Wirth, the creator of Pascal.

Jonas Bonér

Jonas Bonér

CTO & Co-Founder

Jonas Bonér is a co-founder of Lightbend and creator of the Akka event-driven middleware project. Previously he was a core technical contributor at Terracotta, working on core JVM-level clustering technology, and at BEA, as part of the JRockit JVM team. Jonas has also been an active contributor to open source projects including the AspectWerkz Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) framework and the Eclipse AspectJ project. He is an amateur Jazz musician, passionate skier and holds a Bachelors of Science from Mid Sweden University.

Derek Henninger

Derek Henninger

Vice President, Engineering

Derek Henninger most recently served as Director of R&D for VMware's Development Tools, where he led product development for open source projects including WaveMaker, Scripted, and Spring Tool Suite among others. Derek was co-founder of Persistence Software, a NASDAQ listed company that created a new approach for managing data in high-transaction banking and communications systems. He has held VP Engineering positions at Progress Software and WaveMaker Software. Derek has degrees in Computer Science and Economics from University of California at Davis.

Sushila Sahay

Sushila Sahay

Vice President, Customer Operations

Sushila runs Customer Operations at Lightbend, which includes Consulting and Training Services, Customer Success, Support and Operations. She has over 20 years of experience running operations, services and marketing for software companies. Sushila is based in San Francisco and has an MBA (Honors) in Strategic Management from the University of Alberta, Canada

Kathleen Hayes

Kathleen Hayes

Vice President, Marketing

Kathleen Hayes brings more than 20 years of experience to Lightbend. Most recently she was co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of RocketWheel, a leading animation agency that helped brands big and small tell their stories more persuasively through video content marketing. Prior to RocketWheel, Kathleen spent 12 years successfully running marketing and business development for technology start-ups where she designed and executed programs that contributed to both revenue growth and brand value. She holds a BA in Speech Communication from the University of Washington.

Dave Martin

Dave Martin

Vice President, Worldwide Sales & Alliances

Dave Martin leads WW Sales and Business Development for Lightbend. Dave brings more than 20 years of Software Sales Leadership and General Management experience to Lightbend. Prior to Lightbend, Dave led Americas Field Operations for software development companies such as Borland Software, Electric Cloud and Webgain. He has also led sales teams with leading infrastructure companies such as Tivoli Systems, Sybase and Sun Microsystems. Dave has a blend of large and small company experience in the software industry. Dave earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he currently serves on the University’s Industry Advisory Council for the Department of Computer Science.

Brad Murdoch

Brad Murdoch

Vice President, Corporate & Business Development

Brad brings more than 25 years of enterprise experience to Lightbend. Brad has filled a number of executive roles in business development, marketing, strategy and operations for early and growth stage companies in the professional open source, cybersecurity and enterprise mobility markets, including JBoss (acquired by Red Hat), Prevoty, Framehawk (acquired by Citrix), and Nukona (acquired by Symantec). Brad holds an honors degree in Computer Science from the University of Glasgow.

Mike Kelland

Mike Kelland

Vice President, Global Services

Mike Kelland leads Professional Services for Lightbend and brings over 15 years of software industry experience to Lightbend. Mike was most recently the CEO of BoldRadius Solutions, a services company focused on the Lightbend Reactive Platform. Prior to that, Mike was an early employee or founder in a variety of technology companies working in the infrastructure, custom software, network security, web development and hardware sectors where he excelled in creating successful growth through curiosity, culture and focused execution. Mike holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa.

Viktor Klang

Viktor Klang

Deputy CTO

Hailing from southern Sweden, Viktor Klang has been a passionate Scala hacker since 2007, a Java enterprise systems architect since 2003 and a programmer since 1998. He's a big fan of agile development, scalable software and elegant code. He joined the Akka team in the middle of 2009 as one of the earliest committers.

Dean Wampler, Ph.D.

Dean Wampler, Ph.D.

Office of the CTO and Big Data Architect

Dean Wampler, Ph.D., is a member of the Office of the CTO and the Architect for Big Data Products and Services at Lightbend. He uses Scala and Functional Programming to build Big Data systems using Spark, Mesos, Hadoop, the Lightbend Reactive Platform, and other tools. Dean is the author or co-author of three O'Reilly books on Scala, Functional Programming, and Hive. He contributes to several open source projects (including Spark) and he co-organizes and speaks at many technology conferences and Chicago-based user groups. He has B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Washington.

Sean Walsh

Sean Walsh

Field CTO

Sean Walsh, the Field CTO for Lightbend, is a 20 year veteran of of IT and has previously held various leadership roles in the tech industry. In 2011 Sean embraced Akka as the cornerstone of an IoT platform for the Viridity Energy software stack of CQRS/ES microservices. As a result of that experience, he founded a consulting company to evangelize, architect, and implement reactive technologies at major enterprises around the world. He is the author of Reactive Application Development, published by Manning.

Michael Burling

Michael Burling

Managing Director, EMEA Sales

Michael brings over 25 years software sales and sales leadership experience throughout Asia Pacific and EMEA to Lightbend. Prior to Lightbend Michael was responsible for running Dell’s EMEA strategic accounts for security solutions. Michael has been responsible for growing early growth companies such as enCommerce (acquired by Entrust, Anthropics and Thor (acquired by Oracle). At Oracle he was responsible for building and running the APAC security business. He has also held senior management positions in CA, Sybase and SAP. Michael earned his Bachelor of Business in Sydney.
